  • The Move to Metal

Why metal is becoming the new industry standard

In recent years, the construction and roofing industries have witnessed a significant shift toward the use of metal sheets. What was once considered an unconventional or premium choice is now rapidly becoming the norm across residential, commercial, and industrial projects. This transition is driven by metal’s unmatched combination of durability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation. As the demands forlonger-lasting and more efficient building materials increase, metal sheets offer a modern solution that outperforms traditional options like wood, asphalt, and concrete.

    Durability

One of the primary reasons metal sheets are rising to prominence is their exceptional durability. Unlike traditional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles or wood, metal is resistant to rot, insects, and warping. It can withstand severe weather conditions, including heavy snow, torrential rain, hail, and high winds. Many metal roofing systems are estimated to last 40 to 70 years—significantly longer than the 15 to 30 years typical of asphalt roofing.

Additionally, metal is non-combustible, making it an ideal choice in fire-prone regions. In construction applications, metal wall panels and framing provide structural strength without the risk of decay, making them suitable for both long-term projects and critical infrastructure.

    Cost-Effectiveness

While metal sheets can come with a higher initial price tag compared to traditional materials, they offer superior long-term value. The minimal maintenance requirements and extended lifespan mean that property owners save on repair, replacement, and upkeep costs. Metal’s energy efficiency is another cost-saving factor; reflective coatings help deflect solar heat, reducing cooling costs by up to 25% in warmer climates - especially in Louisiana.

Moreover, many metal products are made from recycled materials and are fully recyclable at the end of their lifecycle, creating both environmental and economic benefits for builders aiming to meet sustainability goals without sacrificing performance.

    Ease of Installation

Speed and efficiency are critical in modern construction, and metal sheets deliver on both fronts. They are manufactured in both large panels or
custom lengths, allowing for rapid coverage of walls and roofs. This reduces installation time and labor costs, particularly on large-scale projects where time is a critical factor.

Metal’s lightweight nature also simplifies transport and handling. Unlike concrete or clay, which can be heavy and brittle, metal sheets are easy to maneuver, reducing the risk of breakage and workplace injuries. Pre-fabricated designs and modular systems further streamline the installation process, making metal an ideal material for both new construction and retrofitting existing structures.
